Get to Know Gold Coast

Home of the world-famous Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue, the Gold Coast is one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Chicago. Generally considered to be part of downtown Chicago, the Gold Coast is just steps away from Lake Michigan and the Loop, making it one of the most expensive and exclusive areas in Chicago. Streeterville (the area east of the Magnificent Mile) is a smaller neighborhood in the Gold Coast.

What to do in Gold Coast

For Chicago visitors and residents, shopping is abundant. The Magnificent Mile runs through its southern tip, with designer boutiques, hotels, and fine cuisine. The John Hancock Center and Water Tower Place claim residence in the Gold Coast. Residents also enjoy beautiful Oak Street Beach and the beachfront parks and pleasures it provides.

Navy Pier, Chicago's number one tourist attraction, is a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike, providing a day's worth of diversions with an amazing ferris wheel, carousel, IMAX theater, dozens of shops and restaurants. Navy Pier also has a wonderful Children's Museum as well as concerts, performances, and events.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is a popular attraction in this area as well and showcases many contemporary fine artists, as well as a world-class outdoor sculpture garden.

With CTA buses on State Street, Clark Street, Michigan Avenue, Division Street and Chicago Avenue, and a CTA Red Line stop at both Grand and Chicago avenues, the area is highly accessible. Taxicabs are plentiful but street parking is not. Many Gold Coast residents prefer not to own a car.

Gold Coast's Distinctive Housing

Although very exclusive single-family homes occasionally are available on fabled Astor Street and neighboring streets, housing here generally comes in the form of condominiums, both vintage and modern, and co-ops.
