Get to Know Streeterville
Lying between the most popular beaches of Lake Michgan and the north end of Michigan Avenue, Streeterville is one of Chicago’s most cosmopolitan neighborhoods. Part of the Near North and the Gold Coast, it is just steps away from the Maginficent Mile and some of the world’s most fashionable shops, four-star restaurants, museums and theaters.
Streeterville has an interesting history as it was once Lake Michigan. It was named for one of Chicago’s eccentric residents, George Wellington “Cap” Streeter. In 1886, Streeter ran his schooner aground on a sandbar in Lake Michigan, near Michigan Avenue. Unable to dislodge the vessel, he stayed there and turned it into a home. Slowly, landfill turned the lake into land and Streeter (unsuccessfully) laid claim to the land.
